Studio Art IV

KRISTIN FULLER

I have been enjoying art ever since I can remember, but I almost always drew horses because, with the fact that horses are my favorite animal set aside, it was the only subject I taught myself to draw consistently over the years. Studio Art IV was the class that really got my mind wrapped around working with non-equine pieces and I couldn’t be happier with my outcome.

For my concentration pieces I gathered all my most recent favorite things to combine them into one theme of work; The Hunger Games, archery, colored pencils, and nature. This theme choice got me to to look into new forms of art, thus my decision to work with colored pencils which I rarely do, and working with new animals and learning their conformations which was quite foreign to me. I spent around two weeks teaching myself wildlife anatomy which did not start off well but ended in work I was happy with but I do feel I can improve with more practice. After many sketches and drawings to get some practice in I felt confident enough to begin my final work. Although I enjoyed my new medium and theme I began feeling drawn to other styles of art that were not a part of my concentration which made it difficult to finish my work. Overall my portfolio came out well and I am very happy with just about all my work from this semester.

Lately I have been exploring drawing people and other non-equine animals and have been playing with Sharpie markers quite often. My favorite medium still remains pencil because it is easiest for me to work with and I feel I can grab more details with them and look deeper into how I can create textures, tones, and effects in my work. I work with what I am in the mood to use and create by using whatever comes to mind that interests me, it still remains difficult for me to work on a long term project as I get bored quickly and would rather move on to a new piece. Regardless of how my interests influence my work, my style has grown to where I was hoping it would end up: realistic pieces. My favorite piece is my drawing of Jennifer Lawrence because it is my first successful human piece and I learned new techniques in drawing realistic hair. I will continue to work on techniques for human portraits and other animals and hope to expand into using new mediums as well in my future work.

Although I love art and enjoy drawing and photography I have no intention in attending school for art. Drawing is a very enjoyable hobby for me but I feel it will not become any more than just that. I do have hopes in the future for my photography as I would like to make it a side job to photograph animals and nature. I am very connected with nature and find no greater joy than to take a scenery or animal and turn it into a work of art that everyone can enjoy whether or not it is through the lens or under a pencil.
